Pyxis Theatre presents the bittersweet space adventure interwoven with a down-to-Earth tale about loneliness, defying expectations and finding understanding.

Heart-wrenching dual storyline of a Mars Rover Opportunity and an elderly lady with dementia.

My batteries are low and it's getting dark premiered at Theatre Deli London in November 2021, sparking buckets of tears and conversations about future of the story. Following a successful run, it is now being transformed into a VR experience, coming to you in 2022.

Opportunity rover story

“You were, and are, the Opportunity of a lifetime. Rest well. Your mission is
complete.”

NASA’s rover Opportunity landed on Mars on January 25th, 2004. It was expected to drive for less than a mile and shut down after around 90 days. But Opportunity surpassed every conceivable expectation and went farther than all the other Mars rovers combined. The little robotic geologist had transmitted thousands of images from the surface of the planet, transforming our understanding of Mars and paving the way for future exploration.
Subsequently, it was declared the most successful Mars mission ever completed.

Only in 2019, after 15 years of service, the robot faced an approaching planet wide dust storm. A particularly poetic scientist translated the binary code into what turned out to be Oppy’s final message:

“My batteries are low and it’s getting dark”

On the final day of attempted communication with Opportunity, the team at NASA did what they had done every morning for 15 years. They sent the rover a wakeup song – Billie Holiday’s “I’ll Be Seeing You”. But this time, they knew that a response was not coming. Despite their best efforts, NASA never managed to wake Opportunity up.
